About Thorpe Forest Lodges

Close to where the Norfolk and Suffolk borders meet, and set in tranquil woodland on the banks of the River Thet, Thorpe Forest Lodges are luxurious, stylish and ecologically designed. The wonderful Norfolk Broads are within an hour's drive, and Bury St Edmunds, Norwich and Cambridge are all easily accessible.

As well as the idyllic setting which you can explore on beautiful walks and nature trails, you can also go horse riding, hire a mountain bike and try out the many other outdoor pursuits available. There's an activity centre, a shop and coffee lounge and a children's play area. Thorpe Forest also has a team of rangers ready and waiting to take you on tours and other activities.

The accommodation here really is superb and you can choose to stay within the forest itself, or in one of the lovely open glades. Golden Oak Hideaway is really special - designed for couples, it has panoramic views of the forest, a sunken bath for two, underfloor heating and a log burning stove. There is a gorgeous decking area with a hammock and hot tub.

Thetford Forest consists of nearly 19,000 hectares of pines, heathland and broadleaf trees and is home to a multitude of native British wildlife. Lynford Arboretum has over 200 tree species, including mature Norwegian Spruce and an extremely ancient oak tree.

Jon - Jul 2020
"Most relaxing holiday"
Linda - Mar 2020
"At first look the lodge seemed clean but once you settled in you noticed areas that hadnt been cleaned for some time like the heated towel rails, skirting boards etc. The mop that was left for our use was filthy dirty.
Also we noticed when the cleaners went in they did not have a vacuum cleaner and their mops were also very dirty"

"Pleasant lodges and surroundings in Thorpe Forest. Excellent and friendly service from all of the staff.
Problem with an unknown odour/smell which the staff traced back to the previous users not turning off the gas properly to the BBQ, all dealt with nothing was too much of a problem attitude. Thanks"
Peter - Aug 2019
"Will be returning suffice to say."
Christopher - Aug 2019
"Excellent long weekend
Staff really friendly and helpful
Would not hesitate to recommend."
Belinda - Jul 2019
"Overall we had the best time. Our only gripe was that the kitchen wasnt as clean as the rest of the cabin. The surfaces were sticky and the area smelt a little of grease.
The area, cabin size, cabin facilities, on site activities and staff were all fantastic. Had we have had a major issue or any complaint I felt comfortable enough to contact the staff."
Charlotte - Jul 2019
"Cant wait to go back"
Sharon - Jul 2019

Helen - Jun 2019
"The lodge was very clean and comfortable. We loved the location and accommodation. We booked this location because we wanted to get away, relax and unwind and to be able to bring the dogs with us. This completely lived up to our expectations, the staff were very welcoming and friendly and we will definitely book again."
Susan - Jun 2019
"It was an excellent family holiday."
Elizabeth - May 2019
"A great time was had by all, if you don't enjoy this park then you will not be happy anywhere"
Michael - Apr 2019
"We had a lovely time at the Thorpe Forest Lodges. Surrounding area was ideal for walking but close enough to a town with a supermarket - about 10 mins drive - so anything that was forgotten could be picked up.
The facilities in the lodge were good - as a group of 7 we had 2 fridges. Unfortunately the only freezer was in the top of the fridge so not a lot of room for frozen items.
The retreat was nice but maybe could have been improved - perhaps an area for people with dogs and people without to sit and have food.
Overall we really enjoyed it and would be back."
Lucy - Apr 2019
"Overall a fantastic holiday. Even so were planning on booking a sister sight for next yr"
Kerri - Nov 2018
"Amazing holiday beautiful views and accommodation :) plenty to do on site and locally could just do with spa facilities but this isn’t a complaint Thanks Thorpe forest holidays :)"

Our daughter is wheelchair bound and this lodge is fully wheelchair accessible with a large wet room facility. Very well set out to manoeuvre the wheelchair with ease. I would highly recommend this place, it's beautiful!"
Kirsty - Jul 2022

You will probably want to try and spend the whole day here so you don's miss out on anything.  Highlights include the amazing animals presentation, the birds of prey display and the feeding talks, all of which take place at set times of the day.  This attraction is fantastic value for money and highly recommended.  Their latest event is the Snow Leopard Club Naming Auction and there has recently been a baby giraffe born at the zoo.
Melsop Farm Park - NR20 3DT
about 10 Miles
We love this attraction in Scoulton, Norfolk with a great collection of animals.  Children and adults alike have the chance to get hands on with the animals in the special handling areas.  On rainy days there is always the indoor play area for the little ones and when it's time for a bite to eat the cafe on the farm is open all day selling drinks and snacks.  Hot food is available over lunch times.
Ickworth House, Park & Gardens - IP29 5QE

The National Trust Ickworth House, Park & Gardens is a Beautiful 1800 acre country estate with many attractions including a fantastic adventure playground for the children and a range of nature trails which the whole family will enjoy. The site also has a family friendly cycle route a gift shop and a small café
Suffolk Owl Sanctuary - IP28 6HX
about 19 Miles
This amazing owl sanctuary located in the Stowmarket area of Suffolk should be high on your list of places to visit in the area.  The attraction is also a registered charity and carries out important work in the care & rehabilitation of owls from the region.  The sanctuary also raises awareness of owl conservation throughout the UK.  Between April and the end of September there are two superb flying displays each day so you should try and make your visit coincide with one of these displays if you can.
Dinosaur Adventure Park - NR9 5JW
about 22 Miles
This fun family day out has been well planned and we think is certainly worth a visit.  New for 2010 is the PrimEvil at Dinosaur Adventure.  Other fun activities include the Dinosaur Trail, Arachnophobia, the Raptor Races and the adventure play area.  The secret animal garden is also popular.  You can play a role in wildlife conservation and sponsor an animal if you wish.  At the moment if you sign up for their newsletter there is a chance to win a family ticket.
National Horse Racing Museum - CB8 8JL
about 22 Miles
This is a museum with a difference and a must see if you are into horse racing.  You can take guided tours around the museum or choose to wander round yourself admiring the exhibits.  New for 2010 is a Junior Fun Tour which is ideal for children.  Simply ask the gallery staff for a Fun Tour pack when you enter the museum and kids can answer questions and spot clues and tips on the way round.  One of the most popular recent exhibitions is the Thoroughbred: State of the Art exhibition in Gallery 5 on until 31st October.  Check out their websites for the latest exhibitions.
Pensthorpe Nature Reserve & Gardens - NR21 0LN

if you and your family are interested in nature and wildlife then Pensthorpe Nature Reserve & Gardens is the perfect place for a day out. This beautiful area of national parkland is home to a huge range of common and rare birds from sparrows to Red Crowned Cranes and also has a red squirrel enclosure - part of a conservation programme and now home to a family of adorable squirrels. Other activities to enjoy at Pensthorpe include pond dipping and Landrover discovery tours. Pensthorpe also played host to BBC'S Springwatch in 2010.
Bewilderwood - NR12 8JW
about 31 Miles
Bewilderwood is a fun day out for the whole family located in the Wroxham area of Norfolk.  This imaginative adventure park has won awards and we think kids especially will love the characters and the magical tree houses. You can even book your ticket online and beat the queues by visiting their website where you can also view video clips of the park. This place is also the setting for the book 'A Boggle at BeWILDerwood', by local children's author Tom Blofeld.  Parents are not left out either as you're encouraged to take part and play alongside your children.
Africa Alive - NR33 7TF
about 35 Miles
Africa Alive is one of Suffolk's largest attractions and one of the most popular in the whole of the UK.  The Africa themed park is very unique and gives visitors the chance to see some amazing creatures in a habitat which is as close to nature as possible. The park can be explored by car and on foot and Hyenas and Giraffes are just some of the animals you will encounter as you make your way around the park. Watch out for the lightning fast Cheetahs and keep your eyes peeled to spot the more reclusive creatures. During a day at Africa Alive there will be plenty of shows and educational talks taking place and if the weather turns then the indoor Adventure Play Ground comes in very handy. The site also has a well stocked Gift Shop and a Discovery Centre.
Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park - NR32 4TZ

Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park is an amazing 50 acres area of stunning coastal parkland and is packed with family friendly rides and attractions. This park is an excellent choice for families with children of varied ages as there are a number of small rides for the little ones as well as some adrenaline boosting white knuckle rides for teenagers. As well as rides the site hosts some fantastic shows including the ever popular Sea Lion and Parrot encounters. At Halloween, Christmas and Easter other themed shows can also be enjoyed.  The site also has a good range of places to eat and drink whether you are looking to spend a leisurely hour relaxing with a meal or just grab a quick snack.

The National Trust Sheringham Park in Norfolk was designed by Humphry Repton and the book of original designs can still be seen. The park has many attractions including a viewing tower and a gazebo with amazing coastal views, wildlife trails which young children will love and an exhibition barn where visitors can learn the history of the park.
Bishops Boats Seal Trips - NR23 1RY
about 37 Miles
This is a really unique attraction running daily seal watching trips from the middle of March right through to the end of October.  The experienced skippers will lead you out on one of the traditional wooden boats where you will have the chance to see both common and grey seals.  If you love animals then this is one attraction not to be missed! They also do some boat trips combined with guides on dry land such as seal watching combined with a visit to Blakeney Point Nature Reserve, owned by the National Trust.  We think this attraction is excellent value for money as they keep their admission prices low.
Colchester Zoo - CO3 0SL
about 38 Miles
Colchester Zoo is a fantastic place to visit with something for all the family.  Wander around and see the array of animals in excellent habitats.  Don't forget to visit the Leopards at Ussuri Falls, this new expansion can be located opposte the White Tiger Valley and the Medellin Momkeys.  Other popular areas of the zoo include Tiger Taiga, Chimp World and Wallaby Walkabout.   Look out for special events throughout the year such as Shriek Week on Halloween.  If you book tickets online you can obtain a discount of 10% and are also fast tracked on entry to the zoo - a great idea in the school holidays.
