Which part of Yorkshire suits your dog?<\/h2>\n

North York Moors: heather, forest and waterfalls<\/h3>\n

Open moorland suits dogs that love to roam, and gives you plenty of space for a long walk. Between 1 March and 31 July, though, the national park asks you to keep dogs on a short lead on the moors while rare birds nest on the ground. Near farm animals, keep a short lead on too. Sutton Bank and the waterfall at Falling Foss both have steep drops beside the path, so keep your dog close there.<\/p>\n

Yorkshire Dales: river walks and stone-wall country<\/h3>\n

The Dales are great for dogs, with one catch: sheep and cattle. The National Trust’s Yorkshire Dales dog guidance<\/a> says most of its walks welcome dogs on leads, apart from the boardwalk on the Malham Tarn nature reserve, where only assistance dogs may go. At Bolton Abbey, dogs should be on a lead in Strid Wood and kept under close control elsewhere, so check the Bolton Abbey estate<\/a> for the latest rules before you go. The coast: Whitby, Scarborough and Filey<\/h3>\n

The sea air does wonders for a tired dog. From 1 May to 30 September, though, dogs are banned from the main bathing beaches at Scarborough North Bay and South Bay, Whitby West Cliff, Filey and Sandsend. Parts of each beach stay open to dogs all year, and Whitby’s Tate Hill beach allows them on a lead. Rules can change. Check with North Yorkshire Council before you set off.
