We thoroughly recommend Criffel Hilltop Lodge, a contemporary and spacious lodge which is brand new for 2012. The views across the countryside are unrivalled and it has a family bathroom, a master double with ensuite and fully glazed patio doors that lead out onto a spacious decking area with its own outdoor hot tub. It sleeps up to four people and has a washer/dryer and flat screen TV with Freeview and DVD.

Dog Sport Scotland runs amazing sled dog races through the heavily forested region of Dumfries and Galloway. Drumlanrig Castle in Thornhill is an ancient Douglas stronghold and home to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury - it sits on a 120,000 acre estate which is beautiful for walks. For a bit of retail therapy, you'll find all the high street shops - and more - at the Loreburne Shopping Centre in Dumfries.

James - Oct 2024
"Fantastic lodge , great hot- tub. Very modern and clean, well kept site. Staff and owners are great nothing too much trouble"
Michael - Oct 2024
"Our Nunland Hillside Lodges review: We stayed at this lovely lodge and really enjoyed our time. The hot tub was just right after a day out and the beds were super comfy. The showers heated up quickly, which was great. The spiral staircase looked charming, but for families with little ones or mobility concerns, it might be a bit tricky. Still, we loved the overall vibe and would come back!"
Jason - Sep 2024
"This was a beautiful lodge, with everything we needed provided. Hot tub was perfect, beds were comfortable, and showers were nice and warm.Only negative we had was the spiral staircase. It looks lovely, but with a toddler and a child with mobility issues, it was a wee bit daunting letting them sleep themselves up there. Love the feature, just maybe not practical for our family."
Mark - Sep 2024
"Fantastic lodge with superb views."
Verified Guest - Sep 2024
"Had a lovely relaxing holiday visiting the surrounding area and a very comfortable stay in the lodge"
Sharon - Aug 2024
"We stayed at the Criffen VIP for a long weekend in February and honestly, it exceeded our expectations. This lodge is top-notch, really high quality all around. The furnishings-sofas, kitchen units, bedroom furniture-felt luxurious and well-made, no cheap bits anywhere. Internally, its spotless and everything works perfectly; we had two fully functioning showers and a proper bath, which was a real treat. The windows and doors are solid double-glazing, so outside noise was minimal, even though the A75 runs nearby. Speaking of outside, the decking at the front and the hot-tub provided perfect privacy and worked just as intended. The hot-tub was great and we loved having the outdoor space with the decking. The sauna, not so much, but we werent expecting it to be roasting hot in February anyway, so it didnt matter. All the staff on-site were friendly, helpful and made us feel welcome. Now, some folks mention the road noise and yes, you can hear it when outside, but its faint-nothing that ruins the stay and inside its completely silent. A few specifics for those interested: the 50-inch flat-screen TV with Freeview and Bluetooth speakers (even at the hot-tub!), a seven-gas-ring cooker, electric oven, all spotless and working perfectly. Microwave, toaster, kettle, dishwasher-everything you need. Theres also a washing machine and tumble dryer in the hall cupboard, so you can do laundry without disturbing the peace in the living room. Overall, a superb lodge, genuinely high-quality-nothing was out of place, no marks on the carpets or walls. Wed definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a luxurious getaway!"
Charlie - Jul 2024

Mabie Farm Park - DG2 8EZ

Mabie Farm Park is a firm favourite. Ideal for families with younger children ,this family oriented farm park has lots of animals to meet and also offers Donkey Rides, Paddle Boats and Slides as well as Trampolines and Bouncy Castles. Kids can run around on the Soft Play Area while mum and dad relax in the Tea Room. There is also a Farm Shop onsite selling toys, gifts and fresh local produce including cakes and jams. Seasonal activities can also be enjoyed including a spookly tea and walk on Haloween. The Farm closes for the winter on October 31st.
Castle Douglas - DG7 1TJ

We also recommend a visit to Castle Douglas and the Treasure Hunt Treasure Trails. These treasure hunts are great fun for the whole family and are an entertaining way to explore a new town or village. Children will enjoy solving the clues whilst learning about the history of the area. The walking trail is suitable for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs so no one is left out of the fun.
Laggan Outdoor - DG7 3NQ

Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD

We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery - CA3 8TP
about 32 Miles
This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
