About Steam Mill Lodges

Finally made time for a romantic retreat, just the two of you? Steam Mill’s micro-lodges are a great choice for a cosy comfortable base for the weekend. These lodges are gorgeous to come back to after a long day of exploring the beautiful scenery of the surrounding National Forest of Oakthorpe, South Derbyshire.  Part of Hoseasons Bouja Luxury Boutique Breaks Collection, you’re guaranteed a magnificent holiday at Steam Mill Lodges!

Beyond views of the National Forest, you’ll also be able to admire the glistening lake which the lodges surround – and any angling enthusiasts can try their hand catching the fish there, as fishing is permitted on the lake (charges apply) too. If you’d rather simply walk to see nature than catch it, there’s some stunning countryside trails in the nearby area for you to wander through as well.

Bring your canine companions along to Spindle lodge – the only pet friendly lodge on-site (extra charge applies). Sleeping up to two people over one bedroom, there’s room to relax inside – with an open plan lounge/diner/kitchen – and outside, thanks to patio furniture on the decking and your own private hot tub.

Thanks to the wooden shelter over the tub, there’s no need to worry about the weather, so make the most of it!

For those leaving any four-legged friends at home, Oak lodge makes a great alternative. With a very similar lay-out to Spindle. This one-bedroom lodge offers flatscreen televisions in both the kitchen/diner, as well as the bedroom, and a welcome pack on arrival including complimentary use of bath robes and slippers – perfect for after the hot tub!

If you happen to stay in Spindle lodge, then you’ll be needing somewhere to walk the dog, but thankfully there’s plenty of options nearby that’ll not only get them the exercise they need but provide remarkable views for yourself! Sence Valley Forest Park, for example, surrounds the River Sence as well as three major lakes – so watch out for the wildfowl they attract.

For a fantastic day out head to one of South Derbyshire’s finest gardens, Bluebell Arboretum and Nursery. Despite its name, there’s no bluebells on-site! But rather the woodland gardens there is a Royal Horticultural Society partner garden, started in 1992 and has now expanded over nine acres. Don’t forget to stop by the nursery to browse their range of herbaceous plants after getting some inspiration from the gardens!

Whilst the contemporary kitchen of each micro-lodge is definitely worth using, there’s always those days on holiday when you don’t feel like cooking!  Luckily, Oakthorpe has plenty of options – like the Lakeside Bistro for example. Whether you go for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea, the views over the lake and its wildlife. Vegetarian meal options are also available.

For pub grub, head to The Halfway House. Relax in the beer garden or, for those with a sweet tooth, sample one of Zaras cheeky cheesecakes. Beer aficionados will also appreciate the range of drinks sourced from local brewery’s on-top of the three guest ales provided weekly and their resident Brass beer – there’s plenty to choose from!

Kunal - Jan 1970
"Lovely lodge and everything you could need for your stay. Hot tub kept clean daily and lovely welcome pack with bread, eggs and Prosecco! Just be aware this is lakeside so you might want insect repellent!"
Hannah - Jan 1970
"Lovely place and location. The owners are really helpful. This is just the place for a peaceful relaxing time. The cabins are very comfortable and well equipped, enjoyed this so much, booked to go again."

Kerry - Jan 1970
"Everything is spot on. Can't think of anything that wasn't done for us by the Staff."
Mohamed - Jan 1970
"We had a lovely relaxing break. Everything that you need for a 5 day break in a lodge was there. Even down to having dog bowls supplied. The bowls did make us smile as they were for a small dog and we've got a newfoundland so only his nose fitted in.

Bed was comfy, towels super soft and having WiFi was useful ."
Vanessa - Jan 1970
"The lodge is a home from home with everything you need to sit back and relax. Although they are called micro lodges they are set out in a way that makes you feel you can still spread out and relax in luxury.
The view from the lodge of the lake was amazing and is a great way to start your day."
Andrew - Jan 1970
"The lodge itself was spotless and well equipped. Not to mention the welcome hamper being a lovely touch!"
Freya - Jan 1970
"When our holiday in Turkey was cancelled my partner and I decided to book a UK holiday, something we have never done before.

Steam Mill Lodges did not disappoint. Oak was immaculate and cosy. The owners (who were) thought of everything in terms of design and equipping it, we even had a welcome basket waiting for us. The hot tub was top range and also immaculate.

The area was so peaceful and we had a good amount of privacy for long relaxing evenings in the hot tub. We were only an hours drive from places like Matlock, so it was a perfect base to come back and relax.

We didn't want to leave and are already looking to book a cosy winter break there.

The local pub was excellent and a short walk from the lodges. The locals were also very friendly and liked a chat.

We highly recommend you book here if you want a relaxing couples break. We were sad about Turkey but after staying here ended up be glad it was cancelled."
Jayms - Jan 1970
"Very comfortable accommodation, everything you needed , peaceful, fantastic view over small Loch."

Beautiful views around the lodgeHighly recommend for a couples getaway! Thankyou for a lovely stay!! "

The owners were also very helpful and understanding when we had to change the date of our stay. Thank you!"

Megan - Jan 1970
"Had a great stay,so peacefull and relaxing, spotlessly clean
lodge, helpfull owners.Check in too late though,my only criticism."
Bev - Jan 1970
"The lodge was lovely, very homely and spotless. The kitchen was well equipped and the dishwasher came in very handy. The only issue we had was the Wi-Fi did not work during our 4 night stay. The owner did try and sort the issue on the first dat but it wasnt resolved. It wasnt a huge deal during the day but in the evenings we enjoy watching Netflix or catch up tv and this wasnt possible which was a slight frustration. Overall we had an amazing stay and I just hope next time we visit the Wi-Fi issue has been resolved."
Kay - Jan 1970
"Had the best weekend away! Lodge was perfect and had everything you would need. Great location with lots if walks on the doorstep and walking distance to a lovely pub called the halfway house where we had a lovely Sunday lunch. Loved it so much we have booked to go back in November!"
Samantha - Jan 1970
"I loved this lodge, all the lodges are close together but feel very private. It was very clean and comfortable"
Francesca - Jan 1970
"We had such a lovely time at Steam Mill Lodges, and so did our pup! She enjoyed running around outside the cabin while we chilled in the hot tub. The surroundings were gorgeous and there was loads to do too. The cabin was lovely and cosy and the bed was very comfortable! Thanks for a lovely stay. We're looking forward to coming again."
Lauren - Jan 1970
"THE LODGE WAS VERY CLEAN. GREAT VIEWS OF LAKE & COUNTRYSIDE. THE BED WAS FIRM AND VERY COMFORTABLE JUST AS WE LIKE IT. REMEMBER TO TAKE A DISHCLOTH FOR WIPING AROUND AND A PAN SCRUBBER AS NEITHER ARE SUPPLIED. WE WERE NOT SURE WHETHER THE HOT TUB IS EMPTIED BETWEEN GUEST VISITS. THEY DID HAVE A FLOATING CONTRAPTION IN THE HOT TUB THAT WE REMOVED WHILST WE WERE IN THE TUB. THE FLOATING CONTRAPTION MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH KEEPING THE HOT TUB CHEMICAL LEVELS AS THEY SHOULD BE. WE NEVER SAW THEM CHECKING THE HOT TUBS ON A DAILY BASIS. HOWEVER OUR HOT TUB DID SHOW AN INDICATOR SAYING TO CHECK PH LEVELS ON OUR LAST NIGHT. WE DID NOT REPORT THIS AS WE HOPED THAT THE HOT TUB WOULD AT LEAST BE INSPECTED BEFORE THE NEW GUSETS ARRIVED."
Stuart - Jul 2022

It was great to sit out in such peaceful surroundings and to relax in the hot tub in the evenings. Would definitely recommend. The layout of the site is excellent, resulting in a feeling of privacy in the surroundings."
