The kitchen was fully stocked, which was great, though some cushions might really make it feel cosier inside. The decking could do with a bit of a refresh, but that doesnt spoil the stay. The hot tub was massive and kept the temperature perfectly, which was a huge plus. Wed definitely return to Penvelle for the scenery and location-really lovely!"

Even though it was quite chilly outside, the lodge stayed warm and cosy and the hot tub was always spotless and ready to go each morning - a real treat. The swimming pool was fantastic and what we loved most was being able to book private slots for our lodge, which was perfect for our little getaway. Parking was hassle-free and the lodge was thoughtfully designed to be disabled friendly, which we appreciated. The staff went above and beyond - super helpful, friendly and just genuinely lovely. Honestly, were already planning to come back, probably in the summer this time! It was truly an anniversary to remember and the whole stay was one of our best trips ever."

"Great lodge with a hot tub in beautiful surroundings. We had amazing weather and the kids really enjoyed using the outdoor pool (which is covered when the weather isn’t so good). It took about an hour to walk to Llangollen which is a lovely little town. Lots of lovely walks along the canal, the river or through the countryside.
It’s a shame that there isn’t a bar or restaurant on-site. There are 2 pubs nearby (not open every day) and a bar/restaurant at the nearby campsite though."

You can explore over 10 indoor habitats, including the UK's largest tropical biodome, and walk through the lemur area to get close to the troop. The Gothic-styled Llangollen home of the Ladies of Llangollen, with carved timber outside and gardens to explore.
Plas Newydd in Llangollen was the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, two Irish ladies who eloped and set up house together in the late 18th century. It began as a five-roomed stone cottage and was enlarged with many Gothic features. It is now a museum.
Tip: Look closely at the outside of the house as well as the rooms, since the patchwork of reclaimed oak carvings is its most unusual feature.

The longest aqueduct in Great Britain and the highest canal aqueduct in the world, crossing the Vale of Llangollen.
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee in the Vale of Llangollen. Designed by Thomas Telford and William Jessop, it is a cast iron trough held 127 ft (39 m) above the river on eighteen hollow masonry piers, with 19 arched spans. It is 336 yards (307 m) long and about 12 feet wide.

Whittington Castle stands in the village of Whittington in northern Shropshire, close to the Welsh border and the old fort of Old Oswestry. It began as a motte-and-bailey castle and was rebuilt in the 13th century, with buildings along a curtain wall, five towers on a raised platform, a moat and an outer gatehouse or barbican.
Tip: Look for the viewing mound in the centre of the site, which may be the oldest of its kind found in England.

A National Trust country house near Wrexham, with preserved servants' quarters, a walled garden and big parkland.
Erddig is a late 17th-century country house near Wrexham, saved from dereliction in the 1970s. The Yorke family had an unusual relationship with their servants and commemorated them in portraits and poems, and the servants' quarters and estate workshops survive well. Outbuildings include the Joiners' Workshop, Smithy, Sawmill and Stables, and the house holds a fine collection of 17th-century furniture.

A 13th-century Welsh border castle with Grade I listed gardens and parkland beside Offa's Dyke.
Chirk Castle (Castell y Waun) was built in 1295 by Roger Mortimer de Chirk as part of Edward I's chain of fortresses across north Wales, guarding the entrance to the Ceiriog Valley. It was partly demolished in the English Civil War and then rebuilt, and the Myddelton family bought it in 1593. It is a National Trust property and Grade I listed.

Peckforton Castle is a Grade I listed Victorian country house built in the style of a medieval castle, designed by Anthony Salvin. It has a gatehouse, a portcullis, a dry moat and large towers, and it stands in woodland in the Peckforton Hills. It now works as a hotel and events venue, and has appeared in films and television productions.
Tip: Check what is on before you go: the castle runs ticketed events and the Land Rover Experience, so contact them to book ahead. All vehicles use the on-site car park.

The Grosvenor Museum is a Grade II listed Victorian building in Chester, built in red brick with sandstone dressings and Dutch gables carved with peacocks. Inside, its galleries cover the area's archaeology and natural history, with items from the Roman period, paintings and musical instruments.
