Rutland Escape Lodges

Ranksborough Hall Lodges make a fantastic holiday destination if you're looking for relaxation and a beautiful setting.  Ranksborough Hall itself was built in 1893 for Lord Ranksborough who was equerry to Queen Victoria.  A huge 50 acres of parkland surround the hall and make a glorious setting for holiday homes and lodges.  The charming village of Langham is on the doorstep with two ancient local pubs and an easy stroll from the lodges.

The county of Rutland is a real gem with local villages, medieval castles, museums, galleries, shops and gardens.  Not to mention an array of fabulous eateries.  This county has been described as "the Cotswolds without the crowds" and we would definitely agree with that!

There is a wide selection of holiday homes ranging from lodges to courtyard apartments.  We love the West Wing which is a large three storey apartment within Ranksborough Hall itself.  It sleeps up to 10 so ideal for larger groups, and it has the added bonus of enclosed garden with outdoor hot tub.  The Retreat Spa Lodge 2 is also an excellent choice with a modern interior, open plan living space, amazing countryside views and decking area with hot tub.

Date of stay: 17th June 2018
Lovely cosy lodge, simple but had little touches to make it feel like home! Just a tip - turn the hot tub on as soon as you get there as will take until next morning to heat up! Lovely little lodge.

This was a great feature was very clean, took a while to get hot but second it hit 40 degrees it was so nice.
Date of stay: 29th May 2017
We stayed in the West Wing of Rutland hall for my husbands surprise 50th birthday. The house was plenty big enough for 9 of us and the kitchen was very well equipped.
The area is lovely and we walked into Oakham over the fields and then back via the main road.
The garden is small but ample however, the grass could have done with being cut. Another bench or a table and chairs would have been useful as there was only one picnic bench and not enough room for 9 people. We had great weather so spend a lot of time in the garden when at the property.

Overall, we had a great weekend and would definitely return.
Zena, Nottingham
Date of stay: 15th May 2017
Great, spacious accommodation perfect fir a family break. Plenty of room for 9 adults and 2 babies. Air hockey did not work but did not bother us. Could do with a little updating but great value break
Emma, Wellington, Somerset
Date of stay: 15th May 2017
We had a really pleasant week in the Hall Apartment. It is an apartment consisting of an enormous lounge with dining table too, a small but servicable kitchen, a very large bedroom (with the biggest bed we've ever slept in!) with ensuite. The Ensuite has both shower and roll top bath. There is a rear door to a private garden, which is where the hottub is located. There is also a hallway and a second toilet.

The building, Ranksborough Hall, is 19th century is quite striking. The apartment is full of little quirks and period features which remind you of its age. It has clearly been refurbished a few years ago (2011 ish, we reckon) with some reproduction features put in too. The whole effect works very well and the apartment was very comfortable. However, as some people have been a bit overly critical in stating, there are parts that are looking a little tired. Most of these, though, appear to be either original features or at least with good age. For example, the rear door has to be shut with a 'knack' - yes, cos its clearly at least 70 years old. Why not, its an old house. There are a few little bits that could do with tidying up, and that is the only reason for my 9/10 on the overall rating.

There is a good sized TV (32" ish?), a DVD player, washing machine, dishwasher and everything you need. The TV signal for BBC1 and 2 can be a bit hit and miss - but other channels are OK and apart from putting in a Satellite system I am not sure what they would be able to do about it - its just where they are.

We would happily stay here again, we really enjoyed having the hottub and the staff were very friendly.
Date of stay: 15th May 2017
I had a lovely stay in the retreat spa lodge with 5 of my friends. The kitchen was well equipped and we had plenty of room for the 6 of us. The hot tub was lovely, just needed to be a little warmer on the first night but we had been warned of this in the information provided before our stay. The beds were comfortable and we had a really enjoyable stay. There is one local pub in the village around a 10-15 min walk. Advisable to book if you would like to eat their as it is very popular. Definately recommend to stay here again.
Philip, Solihull

Had a lovely weekend with friends , site very peaceful and well kept
Barry, King's Lynn, Norfolk.
Date of stay: 3rd February 2017
We could not fault the lodge for comfort and warmth and facilities. Our one small constructive criticism would be the addition of a small coffee table in the lounge. As it is carpeted in a very light colour this would prevent people putting mugs on the floor.
Amanda, Stourbridge
Date of stay: 30th January 2017
We really enjoyed our long weekend in The west wing. It was warm and comfortable and well equipped. The only drawback is the 5th bedroom without ensuite. This room is on a third floor and means you have to share an ensuite with another bedroom on the floor below.
Claire, Barnsley
Date of stay: 28th November 2016
We were a group of 10 friends staying in The West Wing for a girly weekend and we had a fabulous time!! The house is huge!! Much bigger than we expected!! The kitchen and bathrooms are all beautiful and very modern. The living room and bedrooms are nice but could perhaps do with modernisation/refurbishment soon but this didn't spoil our weekend whatsoever.
The games area with bar is a very nice touch!!
The only downside I would say was the one bedroom which didn't have it's own bathroom but again, we managed and it didn't spoil our stay.
The hot tub probably isn't big enough for 10 people but is still a decent enough size. We did have a few problems on the Saturday with the hot tub not getting up to temperature but this was all fine again by Sunday.
We did get this weekend at a very good rate and so cannot complain at all and we would definitely stay there again!!
Rebecca, Birmingham
Date of stay: 21st November 2016
Had a great time, would defo come back. Only slight downside was that the hot tub was round the back of the lodge and it was November so really cold getting to the lodge. Temperature not alway hot for hot tube but overall great.

Date of stay: 27th May 2016
Good accommodation in lovely setting and had a hot tub as well!
Stewart, Hull
Date of stay: 28th March 2016
Lovely spacious accommodation. Very attractively furnished. We were 9 people - 6 adults and 3 children. The games area popular with everyone and the hot tub enjoyed by most of us despite the cold weather. Kitchen was large and well equipped - a washing machine and dryer would have been most useful with sufficient space in the kitchen to accommodate one.

There was a very heavy downpour resulting in water leaking through one of the bedroom ceilings and on the top floor landing. We alerted the staff and they dealt with it immediately.

Langham village just a short walk away and very pretty. The Wheatsheaf had a good choice of evening meals very much enjoyed by us all.
Philip, Nottingham
Date of stay: 11th March 2016
A really lovely place and accommodation was really nice and clean and plenty room and spaceus, staff very friendly and helpful and the area was second to none the views was amazing, 100% will go again and recommend it to everyone I know.

Date of stay: 7th March 2016
We had a lovely weekend staying in Ranksborough Hall Apartment. The apartment is good with plenty of space. The fire is amazing. Hot tub was great and in a nice garden. Staff very helpful and friendly. Definitely looking at coming back soon.
Rebekah, Northampton
Date of stay: 19th February 2016
These lodges were lovely and really great value for the price. They were really well equipped with good quality appliances, which you don't always find in these sort of places. The staff were brilliant and were really quick to act on any issues. The lodges are older than some places but I think this is really more than reflected in the price. They could have been a touch cleaner, radiators were dusty and the windows needed cleaning, but overall a really nice place for our half term break, I will definitely be returning.
Date of stay: 15th February 2016
The house is very big with enough space to not get under each other's feet. Kitchen had everything you could need for a comfortable stay. The rooms were clean and really nice, especially the top floor bedroom. The staff were friendly and helpful. We also had the apartment which is so big - wonderful with a log fire. You need to bring your own logs though. We also had the sleeps 6 bed flat which shouldn't be classed as that as having two people on the sofa would be terrible as the flat is just not big enough. It should be sleeps four only.
The only improvement I would say is that the top bedroom hot tube/bath needs fixing as it doesn't work properly but it didn't matter to us as we had the hot tube outside. Also more tiolet roll needs to be provided or bring extra as you don't get enough but you don't really want to ring staff asking for that either.
Beautiful place with nice walks to go on. We would stay again for sure. Really welcoming.
John, Nottingham
Date of stay: 8th February 2016
Place was lovely but the area around the hall had development work which did spoil the scenery. Was a nice place for a weekend break.
Date of stay: 1st February 2016
Had a lovely stay in the retreat spa lodge 2
great value for money, kitchen facilities were fantastic. The lodge was basic but very clean and had everything you needed! Hotub was brilliant we used it everyday and night. We had a very private hotub which wasn't overlooked which added to the experience :) staff were friendly would most certainly return!
Denise, Bedford
Date of stay: 27th December 2015
Fantastic Christmas break. Would definitely go again. Hopefully the outside area will be tidied before the summer as the mess outside the window - broken chairs and overgrown with weeds is a disappointing view.
Paula, Newark-on-trent
Date of stay: 16th November 2015
The Staff at Ranksborough Hall were very attentive to our every need. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We stayed in the Hall Apartment and totally fell in love with the accomodation. The only little gripe I could mention was the lack of coal & wood for the open fire. I had been assured that one nights fuel was included with the cost of the booking and there was facility to purchase more if required on site. This was not the case. No logs or coal were included and there is no facility on site to buy stocks either. The nearest location to get this was at the BP garage on route to Oakham and very costly.
The staff were kind enough to give us a guided tour of the West Wing accomodation which sleeps 10 and this was absolutely fabulous. I would have no hesitation in booking this or the Hall Apartment again.
Claire, Brackley
Date of stay: 2nd November 2015
This was a fab place to stay with family to celebrate a birthday, the accommodation is a great size and great value for money. The kids loved the games room and having lots of space to run around, there was even a toy box under the stairs!
My only negative thing would be the maintenance like light bulbs needed changing, no lamps on lights, the bath spa not working and general day to day care of the property but in saying that the property was very clean and we enjoyed our stay.
There are no facilities on site but plenty to do in the area
Sharon, Oxfordshire
Date of stay: 30th October 2015

Peter, Olney, Bucks
Date of stay: 18th September 2015
Not a good start,Lodge dirty,dishwasher had
dirty dishes in.
Bare bulb in bedroom no shade.
Back lights in fire not working, needed new bulbs.
Yes we did report, nothing done while we were there.Overall did not effect holiday, but not what you expect from a luxury lodge and not up to standard of the one we had last year
Anthony, Stowmarket
Date of stay: 11th September 2015
As said before, it was a very nice break away, would be happy to visit the County again and stay at this site again, if in the area.
Rach, Coventry
Date of stay: 4th September 2015
Nice place to stay had all the essentials we needed and nice area.
Nick, Bridgend, South Wales
Date of stay: 28th August 2015
The lodge is big! I was very surprised by the size of it! Ample space for a family of 4 and this 6 berth could comfortably accommodate 2/3/4 adults and 2 kids - I'd say 6 adults would be pushing it.

The retreat has been well used but still in good condition although there is evidence that previous residents have treated the place poorly. Kitchen has washing machine and dishwasher plus full size fridge freezer so in that sense a home from home. 2 X double bedrooms one with en-suite and a 3rd small twin room all with sufficient storage space for clothing.

Main bathroom is well equipped and a great shower - don't forget to stick the extractor on or else you'll soon steam up like a steam-room!

Living space is open with large LCD TV and DVD, couch that sits 4 and dining table that seats 6 - this living area opens onto a deck area with outside seating for 6 and great views across to the village of Langham.

The added benefit of a well maintained hot-tub was a delight and this was used daily by myself and the rest of the family. By the end of the stay it felt like home from home and I would return.

The overall cleanliness isn't the best but I was pleased overall with the price I paid versus the size of accommodation and facilities.
Stephanie, Nottingham
Date of stay: 31st July 2015

Date of stay: 3rd July 2015
Had an amazing stay at the Hall Apartment. Had the best weather of the year the week we stayed which made it even more perfect. Bbq's, Sun Bathing and a few cold drinks. Apartment was cool enough in the evening to get the fire going too :)

Great little get away and brilliant value for money. Would love to stay again.
Date of stay: 26th June 2015
Beautiful holiday in a fantastic lodge and setting.
Mrs F, Kettering
Date of stay: 15th June 2015
Fab place for our get together lovely big rooms plenty of space for people to sit separately. Only downside was the garden bench outside it just wasn't enough for 10 adults and the Hot tub was a bit murky by the 3rd day.
Jackie, Leicester
Date of stay: 8th June 2015
Pleas see above
Susan, Yorkshire
Date of stay: 5th June 2015
We had a lovely midweek stay in the Hall Apartment, may not suit everyone but we loved the large, high rooms and period style furnishings although the kitchen area is modern. Nice clean, private hot tub set in a small grassed garden at the side with chairs and picnic bench.
Mal, Nottingham
Date of stay: 22nd May 2015
Had a great time, the hot tub was great. The staff were helpful & cheerful. The only reservation was the small bedroom with no facilities, the trip to the bathroom was a long way down. This did not stop us enjoying ourselfs & I have already passed the details to a group of friends who want to visit.
Date of stay: 11th May 2015
Overall very good. Top bedroom needs a window blind. Garden needs fencing as the view from the hot tub is poor - overgrown land and rubbish.
Gemma, Shipston On Stour
Date of stay: 10th April 2015
The lodge was beautiful, clean, comfortable and had everything we needed, the hot tub was an excellent addition and the are located in a peaceful location! Highly recommended!

Matthew, Oxford
Date of stay: 30th March 2015
I booked a weekend away to Ranksborough hall west wing for my mums 60th birthday and it was perfect, there were 10 of us 6 adults 4 kids (aged 5,7,9,12) and there was plenty of room for us all, everything about the west wing was very nice, plenty of room & well decorated, kids loved playing the air hockey and table football and they spent most of the weekend in the hot tub which was a nice touch. Only thing I would suggest would be to have wifi there, this would make the stay 10/10, I would stay here again that's for sure.
Sara, Cambridge
Date of stay: 23rd March 2015
Brilliant stay, lodge was very clean and staff friendly and helpful. Jacuzzi was the best part of our stay!
Michelle, Leicester
Date of stay: 2nd March 2015
We had a wonderful stay in the West Wing. The space was fantastic as there was 8 of us we never felt on top of each other. It was also really good that 4/5 bedrooms had an ensuite bathroom. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything you could possibly need. We would definitely come back to the West Wing.
Jen, Derby, Uk
Date of stay: 23rd February 2015
Beautiful old hall, wonderful space and a great stay. The downstairs - kitchen, two dining rooms, living room, games room are all finished to a great standard and lovely. The bedrooms are all furnished fine - a bit mis-matched but do the job. Hot tub was great but the garden could do with a bit of TLC, some decking, paving areas etc.
Would be good to have a welcome folder for the property of how things work, what to do nearby, history of the building etc.
Overall a great stay (for a 30th birthday weekend) and wouldn't hesitate to go back.
Karen, Manchester
Date of stay: 20th February 2015
The Courtyard Flat was lovely, well fitted out for a small space but had everything we needed for our short stay. The best bit? Was definitely the hot tub!

A lovely place to stay, fantastic for the kids. The town is about 8 miles away but if you stock up you dont need to leave! Lovely grounds, lovely staff, wonderful christmas holiday with the family!! The hot tub could use an outdoor light for use in the evenings/ at night (just a suggestion). Brilliant, recommend to anyone!
Kevin, Leicester
Date of stay: 8th December 2014
Stayed in the Hall Apartment, very grand, clean and had evetythimg uou could want. On a cold decembers evening to have a dip in the hot tub then come in a sit by a large roaring log fire was fantastic.

Date of stay: 10th November 2014
Carpet had a burn and hadn't been hovered properly, couple of bulbs missing, hot tub was cloudy and dishwasher had no door
Date of stay: 10th October 2014
The accommodation was lovely, I just thought that there could be some were outside for your robes as they got ditched lie in on ground and also a little light round there would of been great.
Claire, Brighouse
Date of stay: 3rd October 2014
The lodge was lovely and clean, nicely positioned. The only comment I would make would be for a few extra towels and plates
Neil, Tamworth
Date of stay: 3rd October 2014
some niggles - bulbs not working, picture off wall, loose toilet seats, blind missing, shelf missing. A real need for outside light by spa. Staff said they were aware of problems and said they intended to rectify them when lodge was unoccupied.

Penny, Swindon Wiltshire
Date of stay: 26th September 2014
Could not have been better, exceptionally clean and well presented.
Margaret, Oadby, Leicester
Date of stay: 15th September 2014
Very clean lodge with plenty of space. We had a few niggles but they were quickly put right. Our main niggle was the fact that there is no light by the hot tub. Please, please put this right as soon as possible!

Date of stay: 12th July 2014
A very nice lodge to relax in , a few issues with lights but staff know about this and are in the process of changing them.
Rachel, Catterick Garrison
Date of stay: 19th May 2014
Had a great time, the lodge was lovely and really enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub! but it is a shame that the comments in the visitors book have not been actioned at all, repeated comments spanning over a year about lack of lighting and hooks clothes/towels by the hot tub- it is a health and safety issue that there are no lights at the back of the lodge where the hot tub is, only a matter of time before someone falls off the steps in the dark!! What is the point of a visitors book if no one reads it or actions the comments! Or at least responds to the comments in the book? Would definitely recommend this place to friends and family though for a relaxing break away.
Date of stay: 12th May 2014

Only 4 lodges in an open empty site - little strange & not quite what we were expecting & no reception or contact office.
Date of stay: 21st March 2014
The television had bad signal and no wifi, these are the inky complaints I would have.

Lovely lodge to stay in. we all had a brilliant time. only criticism is that the hot tub is round the back with no lights. Had to drive to Oakham to buy some. Better spot for it would have been down off the front of the decking but other than that, Perfect
