About Queenshill Lodges

Mary Queen of Scots is said to have stopped to rest here while fleeing defeat at the battle of Langside and just a few miles away at Dundrennan, is where she took her last steps on Scottish soil before sailing to England. This is how Queenshill got its name.

Queenshill Lodges offer perfectly positioned, well equipped lodges built on the site of an old mansion house. The lodges sit adjacent to the beautiful walled garden which is open for guests to explore.

There are miles of paths for walking and just over the hill at Barstobrick there is a horse riding centre, coffee shop and The Galloway Faerie Trail. A map for the walks is provided in the accommodation. Guests can arrange for a breakfast hamper to be delivered to their lodge in the mornings (additional charge).

Our lodges are comfortable, cosy and are well equipped with everything you need to make your stay as stress free as possible. Queenshill Lodges is a peaceful and tranquil location and the minimal site lighting ensures you are able spend the evenings admiring the regions dark skies – a truly unique experience!

Queenshill Lodges Reviews

"We love Queenshill Lodges. this was our third visit. You feel like youre the only people there even the constant rain didnt spoil our stay. The grounds are beautiful and well kept and the lodge had everything we needed for our stay. I do agree with other reviews that the mattress isnt the most comfortable but having been before we knew what to expect and took a mattress topper. We have already booked our next visit."

"Loved how much space there was, lodge was clean and tidy. Mattress was not the most comfortable and the shower pressure wasnt great"
Verified Guest - Feb 2024
"Upgrade mattress. Attention to shower pressure"

"Lovely quiet location , helpful staff, very clean and tidy with plenty of walks directly from the chalet.
Lots of things to see and do locally."
Julie - Mar 2020
"Would absolutely visit again loved the place...Few things need sorting though.....NOT that these would stop us visiting....

Change the shower vertical bar so shower head can point down.

Change the actual shower head for a new one.

Put some chicken wire on the wooden steps, very slippery when wet.

WiFi was very week, try a 230v plug in booster, 4 can work from one sender in house, takes the WiFi from house to cabin via main elec line.

Toilet seat needs attention.

Apart from that...AWESOME place to stay"
Tony - Feb 2020
"I Would visit Queenhill lodges again."
Moira - Feb 2020
"The values for money ignores this holiday was out of this world.
It is gorgeous settings and the lodge set were clean with everything and more you could need.
The linens and beds were beautiful and there was more than enough space for us.
My daughter was ill during the night and the staff were brilliant at helping us sort everything.

A few little minor details would make this 5 but at the price we paid it was outstanding."
Louise - Feb 2020
"Everything perfect. Only slight criticism was the road and car park in front of reception. It was potholed and in need of attention."

"Lovely lodge very private and quiet ideal for families and dogs was a really great weekend not far from local shops just so peaceful"
Louise - Jul 2022
"We stayed in Elm Lodge which is the first lodge through the gates at Queenshill. It was in a lovely position with a big grassed area behind it which was great for our Cockapoo to have a good run around. The lodge itself was clean and spacious. A nice sized lounge area and adequate kitchen. There was a notice saying that some unnecessary items had been removed but only having 2 each of all cutlery and plates, side plates and cups was a pain at times. This was the only fault we could find. The bedroom/dressing room was a very good size with a nice ensuite shower room. We would definitely return if visiting the area again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Elm Lodge."
Lesley - Jul 2022
"Fantastic time away! Perfect to chill out with great and quiet surroundings, my wee dog loved running around! Will definitely be booking again in the future; lovely overall and thank you."
Heather - Jul 2022
"Lovely, dog friendly lodge in a peaceful location. Enjoy a walk round the estate then relax in the beautiful surroundings of the walled garden or take a drive into nearby Kirkcudbright or Castle Douglas."
Susan - Jun 2022
"Fantastic place, so relaxing. Clean and comfortable lodge. Really enjoyed our visit, thank you. Would definitely come back."

We also recommend a visit to Castle Douglas and the Treasure Hunt Treasure Trails. These treasure hunts are great fun for the whole family and are an entertaining way to explore a new town or village. Children will enjoy solving the clues whilst learning about the history of the area. The walking trail is suitable for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs so no one is left out of the fun.

An outdoor activity center suitable for families. Featuring one of Europe's longest zip wires, jeep driving, grass sledging, archery, outdoor scooters. A mix of fun and adreneline rides and a lot more.

Mabie Farm Park is a firm favourite. Ideal for families with younger children ,this family oriented farm park has lots of animals to meet and also offers Donkey Rides, Paddle Boats and Slides as well as Trampolines and Bouncy Castles. Kids can run around on the Soft Play Area while mum and dad relax in the Tea Room. There is also a Farm Shop onsite selling toys, gifts and fresh local produce including cakes and jams. Seasonal activities can also be enjoyed including a spookly tea and walk on Haloween. The Farm closes for the winter on October 31st.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD

We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...
