There’s a bar on site, a beer garden, a pool table and table tennis, plus a five-a-side pitch for anyone who’d rather kick a ball. Next door, the Peak District National Park opens up. Conkers is a few miles off if the family needs a change. Wet weather? Nobody minds.

Rivendale Lodge Retreat, Ashbourne

Sleeps up to 8 – pets welcome – fishing

Rivendale sits inside the national park, so you can fish in the morning and be on the Tissington Trail by lunchtime. It’s a larger park with a shop, restaurant and bar, and dogs are welcome, with a dog wash on site.

Dovedale’s famous stepping stones are close by.

Where can you fish near your lodge?

Reservoirs and fly fishing

• Carsington Water, a big Severn Trent reservoir near Wirksworth, is popular for fly fishing.
• Ladybower is a fly fishery in the Peak District, run by Ladybower Fisheries.

Rivers: the Derwent and the Dove

• The Derwent runs through Matlock and Belper and is a classic fly fishing stretch. Chatsworth’s stretch is sold mainly with hotel packages, though some club waters sell day tickets.
• The Dove has wild fish, mostly on club water, so ask about permits.

Small coarse fishing lakes

• Callow Top near Ashbourne has a well-stocked lake with a wide choice of pegs, barbless hooks and a return-every-fish rule. Dogs can’t go to the water, so leave them with the group.
