The South Loch Ness Trail takes in seven lochs and stretches for 28 miles between Loch Tarff to Troutbeck with several viewpoints where you can take in the magical Loch Ness. Urquhart Castle in Drumnadrochit is a historical ruin that overlooks Loch Ness and is embedded in local folklore and legend.

"Our Wildside Highland Lodges review: I cant rate this secluded beauty in the Highlands enough. We stayed in Otter Lodge which was secluded & peaceful. Decorated really nicely, a lot of thought has gone in to the fixtures & fittings, I loved everything about it with a comfy bed , settee & hot tub to relax. Welcome pack of shortbread, tea, coffee, honey & whiskey was a lovely touch to greet you on the table. The wildlife is amazing from your window & balcony with deer, red squirrels & birds. Fresh eggs available at honesty box & fish van calls once a week. Local pub serve nice meals 5 minutes from entrance.. We have stayed in 7 places to date & this is our favourite by far, 100% returning."
"The perfect location for relaxing highland getaway. We stayed with two kids and a dog in a riverside lodge, and the sound of the river outside was lovely. It was the perfect size for us. The outside veranda was perfect for eating or relaxing while watching the birds in the trees - which you could also do from inside with the enormous floor to ceiling window in the living area. The hot tub was the perfect size for the four of us. The owners were onsite in reception every day, if you needed anything. We arrived just after Storm Floris, so there was no electricity for the first night, but candlelight and the log fire just added to the adventure. The owners provided us with extra logs for the wood burner and there was a gas hob in the kitchen so we could still cook and make cups of tea (very important!). Just as the kids were starting to panic the next day without chargers and WiFi the electricity was restored, but secretly I think they also enjoyed the fun of a technology-free candlelight nights in the woods. The thing I loved most about our riverside lodge was the feeling you were the only people in the middle of nowhere. From the big living room window and veranda, you couldnt see any other lodges so there was complete privacy. I would love to return again."

"We had such a cosy stay here! The location is stunning, especially the drive to Fort Augustus - really breathtaking scenery. The lodge might be a bit on the small side compared to others, but the beds were super comfy and we appreciated the extra touches like the bed linen, towels and kitchen supplies. Its rare to find a place with everything from washing up liquid to oven gloves included, so that was a real bonus. The sofa was lovely to sink into after a day out, especially with the view from the window. Water pressure and temperature were spot on, which is always a plus. The bath was a bit bouncy when standing in the shower if youre a bigger person like me, but thats personal really. Loved that they refresh the hot tub for each guest - very thoughtful. We grabbed some food on the way, but forgot bread, though we found some at the petrol station in Fort Augustus - bit pricey. Definitely dont miss the Falls of Foyers, just a quick 10-minute drive, but watch out for kamikaze grouse! The pub up the hill is a lovely spot with great food, just a couple of minutes walk. Would come back for sure!"

Explore the ruins of a medieval fortress on a rocky headland above Loch Ness.
Urquhart Castle is a ruined fortress on Strone Point, a headland overlooking Loch Ness, about two kilometres east of Drumnadrochit. It was once one of Scotland's largest castles, and its story takes in the Wars of Independence, raids by the Lords of the Isles and the Jacobite Risings, when departing government troops blew it up.

A Carrbridge adventure park in ancient pine woodland, with treetop nets, water coasters and life-sized dinosaurs.
Landmark Forest Adventure Park is a nature-based theme and adventure park in Carrbridge, set within an area of ancient pine woodland. It opened in 1970 and was one of the first purpose-built visitor centres in Europe.

A Highland castle built around a 15th-century tower, with three gardens and ancient oak woodland.
Cawdor Castle stands near Nairn in the Scottish Highlands. It is built around a 15th-century tower house, with later additions enclosing a courtyard reached by a drawbridge. The castle began as a Calder property and passed to the Campbells in the 16th century. In the lowest level of the tower you can see the remains of the small holly tree it was built around.
Tip: The castle and gardens only open to visitors for part of the year, so check the Cawdor Castle website for reopening dates before you set off.

A Highland single malt distillery south of Inverness, with a long history and tours you can book.
Tomatin is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky distillery in the village of Tomatin, about 25 minutes south of Inverness. The distillery was established in 1897, closed in 1906 and reopened in 1909. By 1974 it had 23 stills and was the largest malt distillery in the world. That number was later reduced to 12, as the focus moved to single malts.
Tip: Tours can be booked through the Tomatin website.

A vast, almost unaltered 18th-century star-shaped fortress on a promontory jutting into the Moray Firth.
Fort George is a large 18th-century fortress at Ardersier, built after the Jacobite rising of 1745 to control the Highlands. Its star-shaped design survives virtually unaltered, with grassed-over walls, bastions, a drawbridge and a wide ditch. The fortress has never been attacked, and it has been described as "a harmony of pure reason and serene menace".
Tip: Head for the Grand Magazine to see the Seafield Collection of Arms and, if you're lucky, the actors bringing 18th-century soldiers' stories to life.

A Fort William whisky distillery at the foot of Ben Nevis, using water from the mountain itself.
Ben Nevis Distillery is a whisky distillery in Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. It was founded by "Long John" McDonald, a 6 ft 4 in man whose name was later given to a well-known blended Scotch. Queen Victoria visited with her young son, and Long John presented her with a cask of his whisky.

Thomas Telford's flight of eight locks at Banavie, near Fort William, on the Caledonian Canal.
Neptune's Staircase is a flight of eight locks at Banavie, near Fort William, on the Caledonian Canal. Thomas Telford designed it, and it was built between 1803 and 1822. Together the locks lift boats 64 feet, and it is a staircase lock, so each chamber opens straight into the next.
Tip: Look for the base plinths of the old capstans beside the locks.
