Calthwaite Hall is uniquely set on the footprint of the barns used for a historic dairy farm and accompanying country house and gardens, this truly magical setting mixes historic country living with contemporary sophistication. Calthwaite maintains the traditions of a Cumbrian village with the old style estate sandstone village with church, primary school and worker cottages. The historic, gothic hall is at the centre of the village yet cleverly maintains the feeling of a hidden hideaway with formal lawned grounds and ornamental ponds designed by William Sawrey Gilpin, historic listed features such as the Portuguese Sweet Chestnut Specimen tree, hidden folly and veteran trees where cuckoos can be heard. No wonder the Howard family (of Castle Howard fame) previously used this as a country residence.
A range of accommodation can be found at Calthwaite Hall to suit everyone including romantic micro-lodges, luxury country cottage and contemporary, cosy lodge style holiday homes. Whichever you choose enjoy a steamy, bubbling hot tub with views to the Cumbrian starry skies or soak up the sounds of the resident peacocks calling to each other alongside the gentle neighing of cute Falabella miniature horses.
Perfectly placed to easily access the popular areas of the central and northern lake district. Calthwaite Hall also makes for easy journeys up to the Scottish borders or amble across into the western Pennine foothills. Traditional market towns, historic Roman remains, isolated fells and stunning waterfalls are all a short drive away.

Calthwaite Hall Lodges Reviews

"We had a lovely stay at the Carriage House! The setting is so peaceful and charming, perfect for unwinding. The owners and staff were genuinely friendly and went out of their way to help with anything. The hot tub was a real treat and we loved exploring Carlisle and Penrith. Definitely coming back again!"
Jessica - Oct 2024
"We stayed at this lovely coach house recently and it really exceeded our expectations. The place was beautifully renovated to a high standard and super comfortable. Honestly, the cleanliness was top-notch - everything was spotless! The environment looked even better in person than in the pictures. The hot tub was a real treat and added to the relaxing vibe. We also ordered take away from the Globe, which was superb. Cant wait to return!"
Amelia Carter - Oct 2023

"Great experience, can't wait to return and do it all again!"
Alex - Aug 2020
"We recently stayed at the Brackenburgh lodge and honestly, its such a lovely spot. The view from the decking is stunning - youre right among the horses, peacocks, ducks and cockerels, which makes it feel really special. Inside, the lodge was spotless, clearly had a thorough deep clean, which we appreciated. The beds were super comfy, so we all had great sleeps. We loved chilling in the hot tub every evening, its such a nice touch. The Globe Inn nearby serves top-notch food and Toni along with his team are genuinely friendly and accommodating. Wed definitely recommend these lodges, just a short drive from Penrith and well be coming back for sure!"
Rachel - Jul 2020
"A great spot to recharge, always leaves us feeling refreshed and satisfied every time."

Sam - Nov 2019
"Really enjoyed our stay, would definitely return."
Jessie - Oct 2019
"We recently stayed here and honestly, it was a pretty lovely spot. From the moment we arrived, Tony handed us the keys right on time, which made check-in smooth as anything. We didnt have a clue what to expect since it was our first time in this type of place, but we were genuinely impressed. The site looks great - plenty of private parking right outside the lodge and the gardens are kept beautifully. The lodge itself was spotless and had everything we needed, which was a relief. The owners, Paul and Tony, were constantly about, doing maintenance on the hot tub and making sure everything looked tidy. They were always friendly and happy to give us tips on local spots, which was super helpful. Even though it feels quite secluded, its actually a quick drive to nearby towns and sights - Penrith, Keswick, Carlisle and others are all within half an hour or so, no motorway stress at all. Wed definitely come back again!"
Jamie - Oct 2019
"We had an amazing time! Perfect escape to unwind and enjoy a well-deserved break from the daily grind."
Jasmine - Sep 2019
"Brackenburgh is honestly stunning - spacious, super fancy and everythings kept spotless. The view from the deck is breathtaking and the hot tub? Brilliant!"

Harper - Aug 2018
"We had a lovely stay at this charming cottage tucked away in such a serene rural spot. Tony, the owner, really goes out of his way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. There were a couple of minor maintenance issues when we arrived, which was a bit of a letdown, but honestly, the place was spotless and well-equipped. We did mention the mattresses could be better and Tony's already on it. All in all, wed definitely come back again!"
Confirmed Guest - Mar 2018
"We decided to book last minute and honestly, it turned out great! Staying in the Coach House was a real treat - super clean and plenty of space to relax. The hot tub was definitely a highlight; we used it every day and it was checked regularly. The weather was freezing and snowy when we visited, but we could tell the grounds would look stunning in spring or summer. Only downside was the internet - it wouldnt connect at all. Also, since its quite remote, we had to plan our shopping, but no worries, supermarkets are only five miles away. Would definitely recommend!"
Samantha - Feb 2018
"Really enjoyed our stay! The peaceful vibe and quiet surroundings made it perfect for relaxing. Definitely coming back soon, loved every minute of it!"
Clara Jennings - Jan 2018
"Really enjoyed our stay at Calthwaite, especially relaxing in the private hot tub-such a treat!"
Michael - Sep 2017
"Really enjoyed our stay here. The hot tub was a big bonus and wed definitely come back!"
Mark - Sep 2017
"Absolutely wonderful stay. This lodge's seating area sits facing away from all the other lodges, with a view over the fields. Well worth paying the extra for privacy. Lodge extremely comfortable and in excellent condition. Our confirmation email didn't say to collect keys at the pub opposite the gates - you need to get them to get through the security gate onto the site. Small site and very quiet. M6 nearby and some noise of traffic but minimal and you soon don't notice it. My old dog appreciated the enclosed veranda and with this being the biggest lodge on site, the veranda gave him his own space. Plenty of quiet dog walks nearby too."
Cath - Aug 2022
"outstanding - the globe was also lovely for food"
Sylvia - Jul 2022
"Lovely spotless lodge in a lovely small quiet site. Very friendly Peacocks come calling for a treat everyday. Pub at end of road for drinks or meals. Would definitely go back :)"
Trisha - Jul 2022
"Booked this for 3 days which cost just over £600 which taking into account we were actually only in the lodge for 1 day I felt was a lot of money. We were in Calthwaite for a family so it made sense to stay here. The cabin was a good size and clean, comfy beds and the hot tub was great. Staff amazing. My only real issue was that it was hot while we were there and we had no fans or air con which made things abit uncomfortable at times. I have to be fair though we did not ask if fans were available due to the short time of our stay. The pub across the road was also lovely, again with lovely staff."
Amanda - Jul 2022
"A beautiful retreat for relaxation. Not much around, but that's a good thing. The horses are beautiful as are the peacocks that roam around freely. Wonderful!!"
Lorna - Jul 2022
"What a fantastic place to stay unbelievable staff very welcoming that means everyone at the lodges and the Globe inn Pub be back there soon ?"
Geoff - Jul 2022
"Lovely holiday cottage, Friendly staff. Hot tub was amazing!"

"Amazing venue, staff are great, pub food is really nice"
Kierran - Jun 2022
"Great for couples looking for a few days away, would definitely recommend"
Craig - Jun 2022
"Had a relaxing weekend away here Lovely pub on the doorstep with nice food which is also used as check in and Staff are on hand if you need them via the pub too Ideal for a break away from it all, probably not for kids though as not much around. We will be returning"

This is a museum and art gallery in one and will suit those looking for an educational and cultural day out.  You can explore the fantastic art collection including Fine Art, Decorative Art and Textiles.  If you love nature then this aspect of Tullie House will appeal. The museum holds large and important collections of zoological, botanical and geological material. And for lovers of history there is plenty to wet your appetite here. Tullie House collects a wide range of historic materials including objects, ephemera (printed material), photographs and associated information files.  We think this museum and art gallery are excellent value for money as well.
Ullswater Steamers - CA11 0US

This is an award winning Lake District attraction and they have been operating cruisers on Lake Ullswater for over 150 years.  There is no better way to explore the lakes than on water and you could even combine a cruise with a spectacular walk.  For great days out in this region then this attraction is highly recommended and will appeal to couples as well as families.  Corporate groups are also well catered for.
Lake District Wildlife Park - CA12 4RD

We love this day out in Cumbria where you're encouraged to "take a fresh look".  Some of the amazing animals you will get to see include the only Canadian Lynx in the UK and you will have the opportunity to help their Lynx Conservation Project.  The Asian Fishing Cat is also well worth a look - these cats are known for diving under the water and catching fish!  Other activities include fantastic flying displays and play areas for the little ones...

Rydal Mount & Gardens are wonderfully situated between Lake Windermere and Rydal Water offering breathtaking scenery. The home of William Wordsworth from 1813 - 1850 the grand home is now lived in by the poets descendents but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public. Why not take a guided tour and see the rooms where many of the famous poems were written. The gardens are beautiful at all times of the year but in the summer offer a spectacular display of colour. There is also a gallery and a tearoom. Discounts are available for group bookings.

Housing the most fascinating collection of Birds of Prey in the North East this centre is definitely worth a visit if you are staying in the Kielder Water area. Located in Falstone it's easy to get to and makes a great day out for both families and couples.  As well as seeing the amazing birds you can learn all about the captive breeding programme and the excellent work being done there.  Some of the highlights of the day might include watching a Falcon stoop down from the skies at over 100mph and admiring the grace of the Eagles, Kites and Hawks.

Mabie Farm Park is a firm favourite. Ideal for families with younger children ,this family oriented farm park has lots of animals to meet and also offers Donkey Rides, Paddle Boats and Slides as well as Trampolines and Bouncy Castles. Seasonal activities can also be enjoyed including a spookly tea and walk on Haloween. The Farm closes for the winter on October 31st.
Lakeland Wildlife Oasis - LA6 1JH

Located in the Milnthorpe area of Cumbria we love this local attraction.  With an eclectic mix of fascinating wildlife and hands on displays this centre is educational as well as fun.  You can wander around at leisure admiring the exhibits which range from chameleons to computers. Some of the most threatened species are kept at the park as part if international breeding programmes.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs which are great value for money.  There are discounts for pre-booked parties of 12 or more.
