About South View Retreat

This collection of quirky two-to-four-person lodges are nestled among the rolling green hills of Great Busby, in the North Yorkshire countryside. With nature all around, and a truly bespoke glamping experience, this is the perfect place for a rural retreat for a couple or small family wanting a peaceful getaway in nature.

There are some fantastic naturally gorgeous locations nearby, making this site ideally located for people who want to explore the North Yorkshire coast. You will be greeted at the end of the day with a comfortable and stylish place to rest your head, before heading out again in the morning for another fun-filled day of adventure.

The site is surrounded by the unspoiled countryside, making this a wonderfully tranquil setting for an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There are plenty of routes to walk through the incredible woodland close to the site, which makes for a relaxing and escapist day out in nature.

For a more luxurious experience, the site offers spa and beauty treatments for guests. Have a proper pampering by booking a facial treatment, a manicure and pedicure, or a massage. This is the perfect way to indulge in the luxury on offer and feel completely de-stressed. Guests can also book a yoga session, which takes place outside, so the countryside views create the perfect idyllic backdrop for the ultimate relaxation.

The pods have been designed with both comfort and style in mind, and each pod has its own quirky and unique architectural design. The interior is framed with a picture-perfect view of the rolling green hills, and this in addition with the open plan living and kitchen area creates a generously spacious feel.

This allows guests to easily spread out and situate themselves for a longer stay. The furnishings are homely and cosy, meaning guests can easily relax and settle in. There is an en-suite shower in the pods, as well as a hot tub outside on the wooden decking. Guests can also sit at the picnic bench outside, which is a great place to soak in the sun on a hot day. Kildale, Leven, Ayton and Carlton lodges sleep two, which is ideal for a couple. The Roseberry sleeps four and is the perfect size for a small family.

Being situated in the North Yorkshire countryside means that there are some outstanding natural locations to discover. Near to the site is The Wainstones, a scenic point where there are a collection of stones and breath-taking views of the mountains and greenery all around. Scugdale is a national park and is a popular hiking route.

Other than this, adventurous travellers are spoilt for choice for places to walk and hike, with the North York Moors National Park being so close to the site. The seaside town of Whitby is just under an hour’s drive away, and this thriving spot is perfect for an all-day outing. Visit the Abbey which inspired the classic Dracula story and take a stroll along Whitby Beach. Curious visitors can learn more about the area at the local museum. For some retail therapy, the bigger town of Middlesborough is nearby.

South View Retreat Reviews

"We recently enjoyed a stay at The Wainstones with our dog and honestly, it was quite a lovely escape. The space is pretty cosy, so packing light is definitely the way to go, but theyve made great use of whats available. The views from the lodge and the hot tub were absolutely stunning - such a treat to relax there. It felt quite private, though we could see other campers nearby, which was fine. The owners greeted us warmly and gave clear instructions for access and using the hot tub, which was appreciated. The place was generally clean, but a deep clean now and then wouldnt hurt - inside cupboards, the bathroom corners, the sofa and outside areas could do with a bit of tidying up. Some paint is peeling here and there, but honestly, it didnt bother us much. A quick tip - bring extra towels if youre using fake tan, as theirs arent suitable and dont forget one for the hot tub. They only provide plastic glasses for drinks, but thats probably for safety. Wed definitely come back - its a lovely spot!"
Emma - Mar 2025
"Really enjoyed our stay, just a shame the hot tub wasn't warm enough for us."
Emma Carter - Mar 2025
"We had a really lovely stay at the lodge, honestly couldn't have asked for more. We booked the Carlton lodge and it turned out to be just right for what we needed. The kitchenette was handy with a sink, fridge, tiny freezer, hob and microwave - perfect for simple meals. The double bed was comfy enough and the small pull-out sofa bed was fine for extra space, even if it didnt look super plush. The TV was a decent size, which was a bonus. The bathroom had a shower, sink and toilet, all in good order. Outside, the enclosed garden was ideal for our dog (they charge £30 for pets, which is fair) and it had a picnic bench, a firepit and a hot tub - lovely touches! Only minor gripes: the sofa bed didnt look the comfiest, but we didnt sleep on it so it didnt bother us. Also, sitting on the picnic bench wasnt very comfy - some camping chairs would've been better. A sweep and mop in the lodge wouldve been nice, but overall, a great stay!"
Alex - Mar 2025
"Great spot, friendly hosts, highly recommend to everyone!"
David - Mar 2025
"Our South View Retreat review: We really enjoyed our stay. The scenery was breathtaking and it felt so tranquil. The only downside was how bright it got early in the morning, but apart from that, everything was spot on."
Emma - Mar 2025
"Really enjoyed the vibe, super chill and cozy atmosphere."
Jamie - Feb 2025
"We had a fantastic weekend here! The place had all we needed for two and its only about ten minutes to the nearest food spots. Everyone was super friendly and made us feel really welcome. Great stay overall!"
Emma Carter - Feb 2025
"We had such a lovely weekend here! The owner was super helpful, giving us loads of tips and a handy booklet with things to do nearby. The hot tub was perfect for unwinding and the place was spotless. Were already planning to come back soon!"
Emma - Feb 2025
"We really enjoyed our stay at the Farndale pod. The views were absolutely stunning and the covered hot tub meant we could relax even in bad weather - the water was always perfectly hot. The decking was a nice touch, perfect for sitting outside and we liked having a fire pit nearby, even if we didnt end up using it because of the wind. Inside, the bed and sofa were both really comfy and the shower had great pressure with hot water every time. The fridge was a good size, not mini as we feared and the kitchen, TV and dining table all worked well. It was lovely and warm, even first thing in the morning!"
Emma - Feb 2025
"The lodge had everything we needed and was super comfy. Wed definitely recommend it if you're planning a quick getaway. Lovely place! Would go back."
Emma Carter - Feb 2025
"We had a fantastic time at this pod. Its super clean, comfy and the views are just stunning. The hot tub was definitely a highlight! The site feels private enough to relax, but youre still close to charming villages and bigger towns if you fancy exploring. The staff are really friendly and helpful too. Wed definitely come back - highly recommend it!"
Simon - Feb 2025
"Really enjoyed our stay, staff were friendly and helpful throughout."
Charlotte Evans - Feb 2025
"We had such a lovely long weekend at the Rosedale! Brian and John are fantastic hosts, nothing was too much trouble. The pod was immaculate and the hot tub was just perfect. Weve already booked again this year!"
Emma Carter - Jan 2025
"The hot tub, bathroom and bedroom were fantastic. A proper oven would've been nice, but the hob and microwave did the job fine."
James - Jan 2025
"We had a lovely stay at this cosy cabin. The enclosed garden was perfect for our dog and kids. The place was spotless and comfy and the hot tub was just fantastic. Loved how private it all felt, definitely coming back!"
Emma Carter - Jan 2025
"We had such a lovely weekend away! The place was super cosy and perfect for relaxing. We were really pleased to find a good selection of kitchen stuff - plates, bowls, knives, forks, spoons, even a bottle and tin opener. Honestly, everything we needed was there. One small thing - we didnt think to bring any cleaning supplies for the benches, so off to Aldi we went to grab some. Also, no oven glove or tea towels, but thats no biggie - well just bring our own next time. Oh and you can buy logs for a fire too, which is a nice touch. All in all, a really great stay and wed definitely go back!"
Alex - Jan 2025

"The welcome by the owners was lovely as he showed us to the pod and how the hot tub worked. A lovely clean and well stocked pod. Hot tub was amazing. Local pub the Black Swan was very reasonably priced and great food. Day trips to Whitby, Robin Hood Bay and Scarborough were approx 1 hour away. Fab weekend."

Alison - Jun 2022
"Great place to stay staff where very helpful and kind, always around if you needed them."
Linzi - Jun 2022
"This was a first time glamping experience for me and my girlfriend and from start to finish it was amazing. The cleanliness upon arriving to the site and the pod was of top standard. The views you wake up to every morning was something you could never get bored of. The jacuzzi every night after a day of exploring or doing whatever you choose around the area was something you can't get enough of. The location of the site was perfect, not too far away from anything you may need like food and things to do yet it's far enough so it's peaceful and somewhere to escape the hectic lifestyle were used too back home. Everyday we was greeted by John who's the owners son and he was always at hand to make sure there were no problems. We enjoyed it that much that we are already looking at coming back next year. If you're thinking of coming here I wouldn't think too much about it and I'd get it all booked up. 5 stars all the way!"
Ben - Jun 2022
"We stayed here from Fri 17/6 to Mon 20/6. I deliberately chose the location as knew we would be visiting the Beamish museum in County Durham & also York, so it was pretty central. The accommodation was very clean & comfortable. The only problem we had was with the shower not draining away in the morning - it was OK in the evening, though. We flooded the bathroom on the first occasion! It was blissful sitting in the hot tub looking out at the beautiful scenery. This was the first holiday me & my husband had had without children (so for at least 18 years). We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Visited Redcar beach on the first evening & went home via the moors & stopped at Filey for lunch. Would recommend, but beware the shower!"
Nicola - Jun 2022
"A great base location for a break in the North York Moors. We had a warm and friendly welcome from our arrival, with much appreciated local tips and advice."
Liz - Jun 2022
"Very helpful staff, very tidy park, pods are amazing.Great views, lovely place to go"

This is a recommended day out for families with young children visiting the Bedale area of Yorkshire.  Visit the farm and receive a warm welcome as well as a guided tour.  You will have the chance to bottle feed the lambs, bath a pig and handle some of the smaller animals.  Kids will love the big sandpit and the outdoor play area. There is also a cafe and indoor play area for when the weather is not on your side.
Flamingo Land - YO60 7EW

Situated in Malton in North Yorkshire this has to be one of our favourite family days out.  It's a theme park and zoo all in one stretching over a massive 400 acres. With thrilling rides for the very daring like Cliff Hanger, Corkscrew and Kumali, there are also more gentle rides for the little ones such as Frog Hopper and Helitoys.  Family fun attractions include the 4D cinema, the lost river ride and the Little Monsters Den of Mischief. Check out their website for seasonal events which take place throughout the year and you can also gain more information about the zoo.  Flamingo Land is a resort as well as a theme park so you can also book accommodation there.

The 60 acre site is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and is an excellent choice for a day trip. The onsite shops sells Lavender products such as bath and body treats, skincare, medicine and herbal remedies.
Lightwater Valley - HG4 3HT

Situated in the Ripon area of North Yorkshire this popular theme park makes a fantastic day out for the whole family.  The more daring will love the big and thrilling rides such as Raptor Attack, The Ultimate and Trauma Tower.  For the little ones there are some excellent attractions such as Flying Camels, Dodgems and a Magic Wheel.  Toddlers will like the Dragon Boats and the Lightwater Express amongst other things. There are over 40 rides and attractions in total and we think this is excellent value for money too.  If you book your tickets in advance online you can save even more money and beat the queues.
Castle Howard - YO60 7DA
about 25 Miles
Castle Howard is one of the regions most beautiful and historic landmarks and is located in 1,000 acres of parkland with breathtaking gardens to explore. As well as exploring the castle visitors can enjoy attractios including the unique Land Train - the best way to see the entire park. There is also a large lake offering boat trips during the summer months. In high season the site is very popular with families and offers organised activities for children including tours, talks, crafting and animal encounters. The site also has a Nature Trail which is fun for the whole family and an Adventure Playground where children can run off some energy.
Fountains Abbey - HG4 3DY

This is an outstanding world heritage site located close to Ripon in the North Yorkshire area. Nature lovers will be in their element with an abundance of wide open spaces to explore and there are special guided tours for families.  Some of the highlights may include seeing wild deer and bats during your visit.  The grounds are fantastic to wander round but there is also an Elizabethan Mansion, Victorian Church, Georgian Water Garden and the finest example of Cistercian Abbey ruins in the country - Well worth a visit!
The Grainary Wildlife Farm - YO25 3HS
about 28 Miles
Located in Harwood Dale Village, North Yorkshire we think this attraction makes a superb family day out and couples will also enjoy the nature walks in the area.  There are 6 nature walks in total surrounding the farm so walkers and lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Some of our favourite walks include the Spring Flowers, Pond and Village walk which takes around 35 minutes, and the Meadow and Trees walk which takes one hour.
Web Adventure Park - YO32 9JS
about 30 Miles
Come rain or shine children need to be entertained and Creepy Crawlies just north of York is the perfect place! Adults can relax and enjoy a coffee and a snack while the kids are having fun.  The site also has a large and rather impressive outdoor area with pet zone and pedal track with Go karts. There is also a pond with fish and a sensory zone where children can touch and feel new and interesting things.

Betton Farm Visitor Centre is the ideal attraction close to the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough. This animal farm has all the cute farm animals you would expect to see and will appeal to younger children especially.  A great place to both play and learn we think the Betton Farm Visitor centre is great value for money.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs.  Some of the highlights of the day might include meeting Sofie the Shetland Pony and Henry the goat, as well as the pot bellied pigs called Porky and Hammy.

If you are enjoying a lodge break in the Yorkshire Moors and Coast then a day trip to the Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary highly recommended. This centre is one of the regions most popular attractions and is educational as well as fun. Visitors will enjoy a journey beneath the waves, meeting many strange, beautiful and fascinating creatures of the deep. As well as mighty sharks and beautiful rays guests can get up close to some more common creatures including star fish and can also meet the otters, seals and penguins at feeding time. The site also has children's play area and picnic tables as well as a restaurant and souvenir shop. Family tickets cost £46.80 but the Tourist Information Centres in Scarborough, Whitby or Filey often offer fantastic discounts.
