"Suppose to sleep 8 . Only had 3 chairs on decking and 4 at the dining table only enough cups and glasses for 6 people . The single beds are only big enough for a child . The tv wasn't great couldn't get itv on was told we wud have to pay for premium WiFi."
"Lovely sized chalet! Especially for the cost! Cleaning: surface clean but we found old coke cans behind a bed and lots of sunflower seeds under sofas! So maybe a more deep clean needed more often but genuinely no major issues, think kitchens must be brand new and beds are delightfully comfy!"

Not a lot to do outside the complex need to drive atleast an hour before find anywhere to go for the day, swimming pool shop bar arcades on sight, the lodge was a bit disappointing very basic could do with pictures mirrors cushions too make it more homely, no towels provided for a shower, bath wasnt very clean was mouldy and plug hole mucky, skirting boards mucky, rip in the kitchen floor, curtain pole in kitchen wonky as well as stains on the walls ceilings and carpet, not the worst but just an average stay probably wouldnt go again as not alot to do in area."

"3rd visit and have to say we have always had a lovely stay, clean and comfortable, i know the chalets are in the process of upgrading so looking forward to seeing them next time. we could see a difference around the park as well including the indoor pool. i heard that the whole reception area inc pub, pool etc is being knocked down to make way for brand new amenities. the area is totally flat with lovely greens and long prom to enjoy walks and great for dogs if you have them. the town itself is an old victorian seaside with cobbled main road and a handful of shops, bars and takeaways but with easy access to the lakes and towns, happy days, will return"

A much-besieged border fortress where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner, with a military museum inside.
Carlisle Castle guarded the western end of the Anglo-Scottish border for hundreds of years and survived seven sieges by the Scots between 1174 and 1461. It was later adapted for artillery, and in 1568 it held Mary Queen of Scots prisoner. It stayed in military use well into the 20th century.
Tip: Booking advance tickets online saves 15%, and arriving by bus, train or bike gets you 20% off entry at the site on the day.

A Neolithic stone circle on a hilltop above Keswick, ringed by Lake District fells.
Castlerigg is a Neolithic stone circle on a prominent hill east of Keswick, in the Lake District National Park. English Heritage calls it one of the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles. The stones are glacial boulders of volcanic rock, set in a flattened ring with an unusual rectangle of extra stones inside it.
Tip: Parking at the site is limited. Walking from the centre of Keswick takes about 30 minutes, so consider that or public transport.

Walk through a replica graphite mine and see one of the world's largest colouring pencils in Keswick.
The Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick tells the story of the pencil, from its beginnings as a cottage industry to modern production. You enter through a replica graphite mine, a nod to the source of the pencil industry over three centuries ago, then follow the journey of graphite and pencil discovery.
Tip: The car park outside isn't owned or run by the museum, uses ANPR cameras and needs payment on arrival, so check the car park notices.

A red-sandstone castle near Penrith, with a great keep, a double gatehouse and panoramic views over the Eden Valley.
Brougham Castle is a red-sandstone castle standing near the site of a Roman fort, guarding a river crossing south-east of Penrith. It was founded in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont, and his great keep still dominates the site. The powerful Clifford family later added more buildings, including an unusual double gatehouse and the Tower of League.
Tip: Head up the spiral stairs to the top of the keep for panoramic views over the Eden Valley.

Dramatic castle ruins, award-winning gardens and one of the UK's largest adventure playgrounds on the edge of the Lake District.
Lowther Castle is a ruined country house near Penrith, built in the early 19th century and left as a dramatic shell after the roof was removed and the building demolished in the 1950s. You can explore the ruins, then wander the 130 acres of gardens, which include the Parterre, the Garden-in-the-Ruins, the Rose Garden, wildflower meadows and rambling woodland.
Tip: Walk out to the Western Terrace for a spectacular view over the Lowther Valley to the Lake District mountains, and dress for all weathers.

Medieval castle ruins once home to Richard III, set in a public park beside Penrith station.
Penrith Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in the west of the town, on the edge of the Lake District. It was begun in the late 14th century by Ralph Neville to help defend the area against the Scots, and was later turned into a luxurious residence by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who became Richard III.
Tip: Parking is around the town, with only a few spaces at the park entrance, so be prepared to park nearby.

A house-sized boulder in Borrowdale that you can climb to the top by ladder.
The Bowder Stone is a huge andesite lava boulder in Borrowdale, balanced on its side after falling from the crag above thousands of years ago. It stands about 30 feet high and is thought to weigh around 2,000 tons. Today the National Trust cares for it.
Tip: There is a National Trust car park at Bowderstone (CA12 5XA) about a 15-minute walk from the stone. Check the National Trust Borrowdale page for current parking details before you go.

A working Scottish distillery in Annan where guided tours end with tastings and a coffee shop stop.
Annandale Distillery in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, makes single malt Scotch whisky and describes itself as Scotland's only single cask single malt distillery. Every cask is bottled on its own, never vatted. The distillery was founded in 1836, closed in 1924 and was restored after 2007, and it now sits beside a visitor centre.
Tip: Finish your visit with a stop at the Maltings Coffee Shop.
