1. Kendal Castle – These medieval ruins date back to the 12th century and offer spectacular views. The castle was once home to the Parr family, ancestors of Catherine Parr (Henry VIII’s sixth wife). It’s a 10-minute walk from town and completely free to visit. The information boards tell the castle’s story and there’s a great picnic spot if weather permits.
2. Brewery Arts Centre – This multi-purpose arts venue hosts films, theatre, comedy and music. Tickets for films start at £7.50 with live performances from £12-£25. They serve good food too, making it perfect for an evening out from your hot tub lodge.
3. Kendal Museum – One of Britain’s oldest museums (founded in 1796) with fascinating natural history and archaeology collections. Adult tickets are £5, children £2.50. The Roman and Viking exhibits are particularly good.
4. Sizergh Castle – Just outside town, this National Trust property combines a medieval house with gorgeous gardens. The 1,600-acre estate has woodland walks and a brilliant adventure playground for kids. Entry costs £12 for adults (free for National Trust members). The café serves excellent cakes – handy fuel before returning to your self-catering cabin.
5. Levens Hall – Home to the world’s oldest topiary gardens, some of these clipped yews date back to the 1690s! The Elizabethan house contains fine furniture and paintings. Adult tickets £14.50, children £6. Open Sunday-Thursday, April to October.
